Amman, Sept. 29 (Petra) -- European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said Tuesday that the EU expects energy prices to rise this winter, but indicated he does not expect supply problems.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Jørgensen said at a meeting of energy ministers in Dublin, "Under normal circumstances, around 50 million people in Europe are unable to secure adequate heating in their homes during winter, and this winter the situation is likely to be worse." Jørgensen proposed postponing the application of new rules limiting methane emissions for one year in an attempt to "ease" pressure on energy markets.

French President Emmanuel Macron had earlier called on Brussels to delay the application of this law, and a proposal to postpone its implementation from 2027 to 2028 will be presented to member states and the European Parliament.

The law obliges companies importing fuels into Europe to monitor their methane emissions, a greenhouse gas that causes severe pollution.
